Ebonyi’s First Lady Becomes Climate Change Ambassador

Chief Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru, wife of Ebonyi State Governor, has been named Climate Change Ambassador.

Ebonyi State Governor Mrs. Nwifuru has enlisted the help of the 13 LGA Chairpersons, who she has dubbed the “Climate Change Amazons of Ebonyi State,” in her effort to ensure the state’s agricultural output is sustainable.
This was announced by the First Lady on Wednesday at the Climate and Agriculture Policy Framework Workshop at Abakaliki’s Cirene Hotel, where she was honoured by Michigan State University and USAID.

According to a press release distributed to journalists by Nnenna Oshibe, press secretary to the wife of the governor, Ebonyi state is the only state in Southeast Nigeria with a policy framework on climate change, the Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan for the Agriculture Sector in Ebonyi State, and the Climate Smart Agriculture Profile, both of which position Ebonyi State to join the Federal Government of Nigeria in delivering on i.

Mrs. Nwifuru, the award recipient, has stated that she is grateful for the recognition and thanks Michigan State University and USAID for their collaboration with the Ebonyi state government to implement these strong policies throughout the state.

Professor Oyinkan Taise, of Michigan State University in the United States, gave an overview of the event and praised the First Lady for her participation as well as the state government of Ebonyi for its work on Climate Change and agriculture. He said the meeting’s purpose was to facilitate the state’s continued execution of the climate change policy plan.

Attendees included a representative from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, another from USAID, and several from state governments and the conference’s delegates.
